GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named after John Downing, "the hero of 1675" who went to England to procure the suspension and cancellation of the Royal Order commanding all settlers to be removed from Newfoundland. He succeeded brilliantly.    
Additional information (en): This feature is about 93 miles ENE of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and 38 miles N of Virgin Rocks.Minimum depth (m): 155. Maximum depth (m): 200. Total relief (m): 45. Dimension: 87 km long and 27 km wide; 473 km² for a perimeter of 178 km.
