GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: French research vessel "L'Atalante". Year of discovery: 2014. History: Claudius Ptolemy (Ptolémée, in French), a Greek astronomer and astrologer (90 to 168 A.D.), was the first to produce planispheres including the oceans. He also created the first map projection. The first copy of "Geography by Ptolemy" was published with the maps in Bologna in 1477. This book was, up until the XVIth Century, the guide for all travellers who, at each discovery, believed they recognized places already indicated in the book. "Ptolémée" was also the name of the oceanographic campaign which led to the discovery of this undersea feature in 2014. |
