GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Falkor". Year of discovery: 2016. History: Named from the many similarities in appearance to Tell Qarqur, a major archaeological site located in the Orontes River Valley of western Syria. Situated in a rich alluvial plain known as the Ghab valley, the double-mounded site lines near the modern Syrian town of Jisr ash-Shugur and one kilometer west of the village of Qarqur. This is also a reminder of the damage that the conflict in Syria has caused to many historic locations that are now lost or damaged irreparably. |
