GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: New Zealand research vessel "Tangaroa". Year of discovery: 1977. History: Named from a Maori legend of the great navigator Ngatoroirangi (macron on 1st 'a'), who was caught in a cold southerly snow blizzard at the peak of Mount Tongariro, calling to his sisters Kuiwai and Haungaroa in Hawaiki to send fire to warm him. The sisters summoned the fire demons Te Pupu and Te Hoata who travelled underground, erupting flames as they went.    
Additional information (en): This feature lies 25 km south of Oliver Knoll and Speight Knoll in the Kermadec volcanic arc. It forms a volcanic cone with summit crater. Minimum depth (m): 660. Maximum depth (m): 3100. Total relief (m): 2440. Dimension: 25 km x 25 km.
