GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: German research vessel "Sonne". Year of discovery: 1998. History: Named from the Maori legend of the great navigator Ngatoroirangi (macron on 1st 'a'), who was caught in a cold southerly snow blizzard at the peak of Mount Tongariro, calling to his sisters Kuiwai and Haungaroa in Hawaiki to send fire to warm him. The sisters summoned the fire demons Te Pupu and Te Hoata who travelled underground, erupting flames as they went.    
Additional information (en): This feature forms a volcanic cone with a small satellite peak on its western flank. It lies on the Kermadec volcanic arc 30 km NE of Cole Seamount and 35 km west of Kermadec Ridge. Minimum depth (m): 560. Maximum depth (m): 3100. Total relief (m): 2540. Dimension: 25 km x 25 km.
