GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: New Zealand research vessel "Tangaroa". Year of discovery: 1981. History: Named after a tohunga (priest), prominent during the settling of New Zealand by Maori. One of the legends that relates to Ngatoroirangi (with a macron on 1st 'a') is that springs of hot water appeared where he stamped his foot as he travelled around the Bay of Plenty and Rotorua region in the central North Island of New Zealand - hence the appropriateness of this name for an active volcano.
