GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Brazilian survey vessel "Sea Surveyor". Year of discovery: 1990. History: Named from the nearby São Francisco river, on the continent. This name is well known since the 70's and has been mentioned in many scientific papers and publications, for instance in "REMAC Project - Geomorphology of the Brazilian Continental Margin and adjacent oceanic areas". The name is a tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi, who is celebrated on the date of the river discovery (4 October).
