GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Russian research vessel "Gelendzhik". Year of discovery: 2000. History: Named after Dr. M. E. Melnikov (1961-2016), a Russian leading geologist at the State Scientific Centre "Yuzhmorgeologia", explorer of co-rich crusts and ferro-manganese nodules in the World Ocean. He was the author of many publications, including on economic minerals of the Magellan Seamounts, the Marshall Islands and the Clarion-Clipperton area of the Pacific Ocean.
