Notes GEBCO: associated meeting, proposer and year of proposal (en): Associated meeting: SCUFN-29. Proposer: Japanese Committee on Undersea Feature Names (JCUFN). Year of proposal: 2016.
GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 1998. History: Named after Dr. Taro Kanaya (1926-2011), a Japanese palaeontologist/paleo-oceanographer and Associate Professor at Tohoku University. He developed ¿diatom stratigraphy¿ when completing his PhD thesis. During the fist ocean drilling program, known as Project Mohole, conducted off Guadalupe Island, Mexico, he examined the core for diatom, making stratigraphic correlation with inland California strata. In late 1950¿s, he recognized that it would be critical to describe and understand diatoms in deep-sea sediments and cores as an important tool for determining ages. He encouraged his students to participate in oceanographic cruises, thus paving a way for Japanese young scientists to become paleo-oceanographer.
