GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 1999. History: Named after Dr. Motoyoshi Oda (1946-2015), a Japanese palaeontologist majoring planktonic foraminifera, Professor at Kumamoto University, then at Tohoku University. He contributed to paleo-oceanography in Japan, focusing on paleo-environmnental study of the Western Pacific and the Kuroshio Current area. In his later career, he worked for IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) as a steering committee member.
