GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Shoyo". Year of discovery: 1999. History: Named after Dr. Yasumochi Matoba (1938-2013), a Japanese palaeontologist majoring in benthic foraminifera and Professor at Akita University from 1968. Akita is located in north-western Japan, where the existence of oil field and mineral deposit ("Kuroko") is known. He established that the Kuroko deposit was formed in a deep-sea environment, based on the analysis of benthic foraminifera. He also revealed the distribution of benthic foraminifera in the Western Pacic. Later, he established the "Sugamo Laboratory for Foraminifera Research" then joined a methane-hydrate study group.
