GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Korean research vessel "Araon". Year of discovery: 2014. History: Cheomseongdae is the name of an astronomical observatory in the city of Gyeongju, Republic of Korea, which means "star-gazing tower" in Korean. It is the oldest surviving observatory in the world, dating back to the 7th Century, C.E., at the time of the Kingdom of Silla, with Seorabeol as capital (nowadays: Gyeoungju). Cheomseongdae was designated as a National Treasure in 1962. The shape of the hill is similar to that of the Korean observatory. |
