GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named in association with Cape Saunders on the adjacent New Zealand mainland, which was named in 1770 by Captain Cook in honour of Admiral Sir Charles Saunders who commanded the fleet in which Cook served at the capture of Quebec in 1759, and who became first lord of the Admiralty in 1766.    
Additional information (en): This feature is aligned E-W and located offshore from the SE coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The name first appeared on NZ Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'Otago' in 1986. Minimum depth (m): 1200. Maximum depth (m): 1600. Total relief (m): 400. Dimension: 60 km.
