GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named from the nearby Mayor Island ('Tuhua' in Maori), which was named by Capt. Cook in 1769.    
Additional information (en): This is a NE trending feature, NE of Mayor Island (Tuhua) in outer Bay of Plenty, offshore from the North Island of New Zealand. The name first appeared on NZ Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'Bay of Plenty' in 1989. Minimum depth (m): 800. Maximum depth (m): 1300. Total relief (m): 500. Dimension: 50 km.
