Additional information (en): Afa’maolek Seamount is located in the northwest Pacific Ocean; between the Northern Mariana island of Anatahan and east of the Mariana Trough. Feature Description: Max depth: approx. 4,228m, Min. depth: approx. 1,876m, Total Relief: approx. 2,352m. Survey vessel: Research Vessel (R/V) Falkor; oceanographic research vessel, and flagship vessel of the Schmidt Ocean Institute. Meaning: “Afa’maolek”; Chamorro word for ‘cooperation’; Chamorro is the spoken language of the Chamorro people indigenous to Guam and Northern Mariana Islands; the translation and context of Afa’maolek was verified by the council on Guam and translates as: To be good to one another; collaborate; form a group; help out; cooperate with; be friends. The word communicates the close working relationship between the Falkor (Schmidt Ocean Institute) and Okeanos Explorer’s (NOAA) for coordinating surveying and sharing of data. It also honors the local indigenous language and culture. Proposed by Mr. Leighton Rolley, Schmidt Ocean Institute. Approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names at USBGN Meeting 271; 17 Oct. 2017. |
