Additional information (en): Kaunana Seamount is located in the Northern Pacific Ocean; western Hawaiian Ridge; approx. 80 miles south of Midway Islands; Beyond the U.S. Territorial Sea and within the U.S. EEZ. It is situated within the Papahanumokuakea Marine Nat’l Monument. Feature Description: Max depth: approx. 4,900m, Min depth: approx. 934m Total Relief: approx. 3,966m. Survey vessel: NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer Meaning: “Kaunana”; the Hawaiian word for ‘discovered’. The name is in honor of the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer that discovered many aspects about the region during a recent expedition to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
