Additional information (en): This feature forms a flat-floored area at the lower end of Madden Canyon, on the lower continental slope, located approximately 70 km offshore from the E coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The name First appeared on NZ Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'Turnagain' in 1976.According to the GEBCO terminology, this feature may appear as a Basin. However, it is kept as Trough in the Gazetteer as a long term name in common usage. Minimum depth (m): 1700. Maximum depth (m): 2000. Total relief (m): 300. Dimension/size: 65 km x 15 km. |

GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named in association with Porangahau (locality), Porangahau River and Porangahau Stream on the adjacent New Zealand mainland. Lit. "po": night; "rangahau": pursuit. The inhabitants of Heretaunga once had to make a retreat from their enemies at this place. The NZGB's archives record that Porangahau is named after a Rangitane chief. There is a macron on the "o". |
