GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2008. History: Named from the Shorea astylosa, "Yakal" in Filipino language, a medium to large tree about 25 to 30 meters tall which is endemic to the Philippines and commonly found in the nearby Luzon Island. Its wood is hard and dark brownish-yellow. It is used for high-grade construction, bridges and wharves, mine timber, and other installations requiring high strength and durability.
