GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. oceanographic research vessel "Hayes". Year of discovery: 1972. History: Named after João José Bigarella (1923-2016), a renown Brazilian geologist. He joined the Federal University of Paraná in 1949, as professor of mineralogy and petrology. His works included the study of beach dynamics, of the sedimentation of the Brazilian coast, and of the sea-level variation during the Quaternary era. He was invited to join the Academy of Letters of the Brazilian Paraná State and was awarded many prizes and honours in Brazil, as recognition for the excellence of his scientific contributions. |
