GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Shoyo". Year of discovery: 2001. History: Named after Dr. Keishin Suzuki (1905-1993), a Japanese astro-geophysicist, for his significant contribution to Japan's hydrography in the field of astronomy and calendar. When astronomical almanacs could not be imported into Japan during World War II, he contributed to developing astronomical navigation tables, which resulted in Japan's own astronomical navigation tables (Japanese ephemeris) in 1943. He also taught and popularized astronomy in Japan as a professor of astronomy, and published about 40 books on astronomy. |
