GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 2000. History: Named in association with the nearby Magoshichi Guyots, which were named after Magoshichi Sato (1910-2006), a legendary Japanese captain and educator in hydrography and oceanography. This feature looks like a badge of Captain Magoshichi, displaying a compass mark. As this mark ressembled a star, "Magoshichi-no-Hoshi" literally means "a star of Captain Magoshichi". |
