GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Shoyo". Year of discovery: 2000. History: Named after Mr. Tokuro Nakano (1874-1932), a Japanese geophysicist. He was in charge of geodetic measurement for making nautical charts at the Hydrographic Department of Japan. From 1915 to 1917, he conducted a wireless determination of the longitude, which resulted in the revision of the geodetic datum origin of Japan in 1918, known as Tokyo Datum. This datum had been used in Japan until 2002, when Japan moved to the WGS84 datum. |
