Minami-Tori Shima Island, also known as Marcus Island, is an isolated Japanese coral atoll in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, and the easternmost land territory of Japan. Minimum depth (m): 2638. Maximum depth (m): 5756. Total relief (m): 3118. Dimension/size: 20 km × 15 km. |

GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Shoyo". Year of discovery: 2001. History: Named from its geographical position, close to O-Hakucho Guyot. "O-Hakucho-no-Tamago" means "an egg of a big swan" in Japanese ("O" for Big and "Hakusho" for Swan). A series of Seamounts and Guyots around the nearby Minami-Tori Shima Island (literally "Southern Bird Island" in Japanese) have been given bird names. The situation of O-Hakucho Guyot and O-Hakucho-no-Tamago Seamount, with the seamount much smaller than the guyot, is like a bird with its egg. |
