GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 2000. History: Named after Mr. Kohei Ono (1905-1968), a Japanese geophysicist and oceanographer. He made a significant contribution to Japan's hydrography in the field of tidal current measurements. Around 1950, he invented a tidal current meter that bore his name (Ono current meter). It had a torpedo-like shape with propellers, recording current data automatically. This current meter enabled current measurements at multiple points, as well as long-term continuous measurements, making a breakthrough in oceanographic surveys at the Hydrographic Department of Japan. |
