GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): "Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel ""Shoyo"". Year of discovery: 2000. History: Named after Carl Joseph Shipek (1917-1969), a pioneer marine geologist at the U.S. Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego, California from 1948 until his death. His major contributions to geology of the seafloor were in the field of underwater photography. He became an internationally recognized authority in the development of deep-sea cameras, their use at sea, and subsequent study of photographs of the seafloor. Shipek also served in the U.S. Coast Guard and achieved the rank of Commander, U.S. Coast Guard Reserve." |
