Notes Additional information (en): Feature description: An undersea re-entrant covering approximately 1390km² centred at -37.4272 latitude, 178.5635 longitude, located approximately 14km north of East Cape at its eastern end, and 7km north-northeast of Midway Point at its western end. History/Origin/Meaning: Named in association with Matakaoa Point on the nearby mainland.

GEBCO: associated meeting, proposer and year of proposal (en): Associated meeting: SCUFN-34. Proposer: New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB). History: 2020.    
GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named in association with Matakaoa Point on the nearby mainland of New Zealand. Translates as ‘surface of tide as it churns over a reef’.
