GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Robert D. Conrad". Year of discovery: 1970. History: Named from the Andiroba, a tree that occurs in rainforests nearby the edge of rivers. It can reach 55-meter height (180 feet). The Andiroba tree is native to the Amazon, but also grows in Central America and the Caribbean. An oil is produced from its seeds, which is used as an insect repellent, in traditional medicine and in cosmetic products. |
