GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Vema". Year of discovery: 1968. History: Named after João de Paiva Carvalho (1903-1961), a Brazilian oceanographer. He was a pioneer in the studies of oceanography in the Brazilian State of São Paulo. In 1946, he contributed to the establishment of the Ocanographic Institute at the São Paulo University and its Department of Biological Oceanography, which he dedicated his professional life. His name is perpetuated in several species. |
