GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Vema". Year of discovery: 1966. History: Named from the nearby São Francisco Canyon, which itself is the continuity of São Francisco River. The name is a tribute to Saint Francis of Assis, who is celebrated at the date of the river discovery.
