GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Vema". Year of discovery: 1974. History: Tamoio refers to an individual of the Tupinambás indigenous group that occupied coastal areas from the North of São Paulo State to Cabo Frio city, in the Rio de Janeiro State, and Vale do Paraíba region, Southeast of Brazil. Tamoio is a word from the Tupi indigenous language that means “grandparents”, which indicates they were one of the oldest tupi group established on the Brazilian coast. |
