GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 1987. History: Named after Dr. Shinji Nagaoka (????-2011), a Japanese geologist who mainly worked on tephra chronology ofthe Quaternary period. He also worked for the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department of Japan, where he was involved in the surveyof Japan’s extended continental shelf.
