GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2008. History: Named from the Hagakhak tree (Dipterocarpus validus Blume). It is native to the Philippines and plays an important role in wildlife conservation, as wild pigs, wild deer, and even bees benefit from its fruits and flowers. Its hard and heavy timber is used inconstruction and furniture-making. It also yields wood oil that has manypractical and medicinal uses. Hagakhak is also a Tagalog word which means “unrestrained loud laughter”. |
