GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Nathaniel B. Palmer". Year of discovery: 2005. History: Named after William Blaxland Benham (1860–1950). His large body of scientific work included publications on the sub-Antarctic islands and material collected on Scott’s Antarctic expedition (1910-1913). The first name (William) is included to avoid duplication with a ‘Benham’ feature in the Philippine Sea, named after the captain of the vessel who discovered it. |
