GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Mexican Research Vessel "Dr. Jorge Carranza Fraser". Year of discovery: 2016. History: Named after Mauro Cárdenas Figueroa (1918-2006), a Mexican biologist considered a pioneer in fisheries biology in the country. He produced the first scientific works on shrimp. He was also the first director of the National Fisheries Institute from 1962 to 1968. Among his main achievements are the first turtle camps and the first National Fisheries Atlas.
