GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2008. History: Named from the Makaasim (Syzygium nitidum Benth), a tree indigenous to the Philippines. It thrives in low and middle-altitude soils. Its wood is heavy, moderately hard, durable, and moderately resistant to fungi and termites. It works well with ordinary tools, nailing, and screwing, thus is a good source of timber for general construction, shipbuilding, and furniture. |
