GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Chilean vessel AGS "Cabo de Hornos". Year of discovery: 2014. History: Named after Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme (1778-1842), a Chilean independence leader who made an outstanding contribution to the independence of Chile, during the emancipation from the Spanish crown at the beginning of the 19th century. He led the incipient nation between 1817 and 1823, as the country's highest authority, carrying out various works to strengthen the country's autonomy, such as, the Chilean Army foundation and its parent school, and the Chilean independence official declaration on February 12th, 1818.
