De Belgische Antarctica expeditie (1897-1899) onder leiding van Adrien de Gerlache ontdekte het eiland en noemde het naar Johan Bryde, de vertegenwoordiger van de Belgische Antarctica expeditie in het Noorse Sandefjord. |
