GEBCO: associated meeting, proposer and year of proposal (en): Associated meeting: SCUFN-13. Proposer: Robert L. Fisher, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), USA. Year of proposal: 1969.
GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Argo". Year of discovery: 1968. History: Named from the American merchant brigantine "Mary Celeste", also known as "mystery ship". Originally named "Amazon" under the British flag. The ship is famous for having been discovered on 5 December 1872 at about 100 nautical miles southwest of São Miguel Island, Azores, unmanned and apparently abandoned, although the weather was fine and her crew were experienced and capable seamen. When found derelict, "Mary Celeste" was in seaworthy condition and still under sail, heading toward the Strait of Gibraltar. She had been at sea for a month and had more than six months' worth of food and water on board. Her cargo was virtually untouched and the crew's personal belongings including valuables were still in place. None of those on board were ever seen or heard from again and their disappearance often is cited as the greatest maritime mystery of all time.
